Free time! Free time! Well, even my mind is smart enough to make me take a long-needed break from monotony. This past weekend was everything I needed and then some. There's just nothing better than sitting around with good friends and sharing a laugh at some self-deprecating stories.
Friday:
A few of us headed out for a friend's birthday at the Yaletown Brewing Company. Yes, they brew beer and are located in Yaletown alongside numerous fancy and expensive restaurants like Glowbal (great place, just expensive for a student of my pedigree..). I got a BBQ chicken pizza (classy, I know) and a few of their beers: some seasonal Hefeweizen, their Mainland Lager and Downtown Brown. The first two were pretty good, but the last one honestly tasted like a carbonated iced coffee with a hint of alcohol; that just isn't my cup of joe (see what I did there? Sigh..). After much persuasion we headed down to The Cambie; I have no clue why one would even need to be convinced to go to there. If you've never been, it is one of the best bars this side of the Rockies. $11 pitchers and a down to earth crowd. Also, the greatest arcade game in the world:

Saturday:
After doing much research and deliberating, I decided to buy a Canucks jersey off of craigslist. The deal wasn't exactly irresistible, but it was convincing enough. I mean, I need to rock my team's colours if I'm dropping $1200 on tickets this year amirite?
A good friend is leaving the West Coast to pursue
her academic interests in Halifax. As a result, she had a little going away picnic at probably the most ghetto park in East Van. We did some catching up, experienced my first crack at fondue and then left shortly after, convinced I was going to go home to study for the rest of the young night. Instead, I ended up showing my new place to a friend and wasted time playing Wii on our fucking 50+" HDTV. I cannot wait to live at this place...

Whether it be a blessing or a detriment, our new place is walking distance from my favourite bar. It's always good times at the ewalk. Great neighbourhood feel and no pretentious assholes slamming jagerbombs and fist pumping. Oddly enough the power in the whole neighbourhood shortly after we got there but fortunate for us deep fryers stay hot and we got to indulge in some delicious cheap wings. The power stayed out for a long time so we decided to leave. I dropped off my brother and his friends and decided to call it a night and take my friend home. Being the idiots we are, and having noticed that the power in the bar was back, the first thing we did was turn around, pick up the crew and head back for more greasy goodness and cold brrr. Good times ewalk, good times.
Unfortunately that has been one of the more fun weekends this summer, a very, very welcome break that will hopefully recharge the batteries for the final little push here. Outside of my two week trip to Taiwan, this summer has paled in comparison to last year's. For a student who toils for 8 months a year, I've the right to demand quite a bit from my summer. Compact that with not earning a single penny the whole break and what I've got is rather boring, but I'm trying to make the best of it. We sacrifice now for what's coming later down the road, right?
Sept. 3rd, can't come slow enough yet Sept. 4th can't come fast enough.
Oh yeah, happy birthday pop!
